Hyper-V Replica does one focused job: it copies a virtual machine from one Hyper-V host to another on a scheduled basis.

You are not recovering from a week-old backup. You are working with a replica that was synchronized hours, or potentially minutes, before the failure.

It is important to be clear about what this is and is not. Hyper-V Replica is a disaster recovery tool, not a high availability solution. There is a meaningful difference. High availability means minimal or zero downtime — the system handles failover automatically and users may not even notice. Disaster recovery means you have a recovery path. You will have some downtime, but you will not be rebuilding from scratch or restoring from cold backups.

For a lot of real-world scenarios — branch offices, smaller businesses, lab environments, or secondary systems — that distinction is perfectly acceptable. The goal is to recover, and Hyper-V Replica makes that possible without requiring a full Windows Server Failover Cluster.

What You Need Before You Start

Before touching Hyper-V Manager, there are a few prerequisites worth confirming:

  • Both servers should be on the same domain. Kerberos authentication, which is what you will use in a lab or internal environment, depends on it.
  • Both hosts should be fully updated. This avoids a whole category of preventable issues before you even begin.
  • The Hyper-V role must be installed on both servers. If you are working in a fresh environment, make sure this is done before moving forward.

Getting these right at the start saves a lot of troubleshooting later.

Configuring Hyper-V Replica: Step by Step

The configuration process is symmetrical — you are going to perform essentially the same steps on both hosts. Start with your primary server, then repeat on the replica server.

Step 1: Open Hyper-V Settings

Open Hyper-V Manager, right-click the server name in the left panel, and select Hyper-V Settings.

Step 2: Enable Replication

In the settings window, find Replication Configuration in the left sidebar. Enable it by checking the box at the top.

Step 3: Choose Your Authentication Method

You will be asked how incoming replication traffic should be authenticated. Select Use Kerberos (HTTP).

A quick note here: Kerberos over HTTP is fine for a lab or internal test environment. If you are doing this in production, you should be using HTTPS with a certificate instead. HTTP means the data is not encrypted in transit — an acceptable trade-off in a controlled lab, but not something you want in a live environment handling sensitive workloads.

Step 4: Restrict Replication to Specific Servers

Rather than allowing replication from any server, choose Allow replication from the specified servers. Click Add and enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the other Hyper-V host — for example, HV01.test.lan. Using the FQDN matters here; a short hostname may not resolve correctly depending on your DNS configuration.

You will also be prompted to specify a storage location for the replica files and assign it to a replication group. Set this to match your domain and environment as appropriate.

Step 5: Open the Firewall Rule

Go to Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and navigate to Inbound Rules. Find the rule named Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener (TCP-In) and make sure it is enabled. Without this, replication traffic will be silently blocked and nothing will work — even if every other setting is correct.

Step 6: Repeat on the Second Host

Do the exact same steps on your second Hyper-V server. Both hosts need to be configured as replication endpoints for the setup to work bidirectionally. Even if you only plan to replicate in one direction initially, it is good practice to have both sides ready.

Once both hosts are configured, you can right-click any VM in Hyper-V Manager and select Enable Replication to start the wizard and configure replication for that specific machine.
